Limbo Lights
Everyone loves the limbo! If you are looking for homeschool ideas for physical education, limbo lights are a great activity to pursue! This activity is best performed in a room that is dark. You do not have to worry about setting up any type of structure for this game. All you have to do is grab a flashlight, some music, and you are all set! Simply line up your homeschool students and get the music started! The beam of the flashlight serves as the “limbo bar”. Whoever gets hit by the beam is completely eliminated from the game. You may have great reasons for moving — a much better job, better schools, closer to family, etc. But whatever your reason, moving is almost always hard on your children. In fact, Cincinnati pediatrician Dr. Mona Mansour found in a study that children who change schools frequently are more likely to have both academic and behavioral issues. Fortunately, you can help your children adjust to their new schools and make the transition easier.
It can be hard to tell if your son or daughter is having problems at school until reports cards come out. Most schools offer only minimal information about coursework and expectations and of course talking about school may not be something that our kids want to do with you every day. This makes it difficult for parents to judge how well their children is mastering the material.
Here are a few ways which can get involved that will help you check up on your child's schoolwork without having to wait for report-card time:
- Never be afraid to talk to your child's teacher. Schedule a meeting if need be. At teacher parenting conferences let the teacher know they are free to contact you if there are any problems or issues. The key is to get involved.
- Another way to get involved is to join your local PTA. There are a number of benefits, not only for you, but for your child. By joining the Parent Teachers Association you know only get a voice in what is going on locally, you get a chance to connect and build relationships with other parents and teachers. Here is some more information on the excellent benefits of joining the PTA.
- Talk to your child about her classwork. Does she feel confident? Does she say whether she is keeping up or feels behind the rest of the kids?
- Take notice of any comments that the teacher is giving on the papers.
- Check the work that your child brings home each day. You may have to dig through crumpled papers at the bottom of her backpack. Ask what assignments her teacher is giving the class.
- Most of the time the teacher will send home progress reports in between report cards. Are you getting them? If not then be sure to keep up with your child's reports from now on.

Before my children were born, I decided that I would homeschool them. Naturally, I faced a lot of opposition in my choice, but I realized it was just that – MY choice. Immediately after the birth of my first child, I started to research homeschool programs. I was shocked to see just how much this particular educational choice would end up costing us. Then, I overheard a casual conversation regarding a homeschool program that a coworker used with her children while on a break at work. This homeschool program was not a traditional homeschool curriculum, but I liked the concept. It was actually referred to as “public virtual school”. The program was offered by The Connections Academy.

My daughter will be in an internship through her school next year, which will be her senior year. She is planning to go to college and on to veterinarian school. The academy where she will be going has several programs that allow students to work in internships to gain practical, hands on experience in the field of their choice. The program in which she will be participating teaches animal care, dog grooming and related things dealing with animals. It allows students to actually work in an environment where they are caring for and handling the animals, giving them real life, practical experience.
Located just outside of Washington, D.C., this academy has several programs including computer science and gourmet cooking. Some of the programs even pay the students. But internship opportunities for high school students are available all over the country. Some are small, local programs like the one my daughter is attending, while others take students for several weeks in the summer to a major city where they gain real life experience in a professional setting.
