Creating a Positive Reading Environment at Home!
by Kevin Heath
Creating a positive reading environment at home is an endeavor that each parent should have. This is an essential component to the educational growth and development of your child. There are many things that you can do as a parent to ensure that your child is enthusiastic when it comes to learning, specifically in the area of reading. In turn, the child will become proficient in reading, as well as other academic subjects that they introduced to. Here, I will offer some strategies that you can use in creating a positive reading environment at home!
The first thing that you can do in order to create a positive outlook on reading in the home is to discover what types of interests that your child has. You should ensure that you keep reading material in the home that is relevant to the interests that the child has. This will prove to be highly motivational. If your child enjoys dinosaurs, you could purchase books about these animals. If your child has an interest in public services, you could purchase age appropriate books that inform about firefighters, policemen and more! Seeking out the interests of the child is one of the best measures that can be used to encourage them to take an avid interest in reading.
Encouraging Reading
The next thing that you can do in order to ensure that your child is interested in reading is purchase books that have an assortment of activities in them that your child can enjoy. Examples would be the books that have those little pieces of fur built in on animals, pop up books, books that have flaps that can be open and shut, as well as mirrors and other built in activities. Not only does this draw an interest towards reading and learning, but it also enhances the fine motor skills of the child. You may want to keep a selection of books that are both above and below the child’s reading level. This will help to refresh them, and advance them all at the same time.
There are many different types of books and reading materials that you should ensure that you keep in the house. One type of book that you may be interested in are magazines that are specially designed for children. Examples include “Discovery Kids”, or “National Geographic for Kids”. These types of magazines offer up to date type articles and information to children on topics that interest them the most. Many children may enjoy the art work and story lines of comic books that include their favorite cartoon and movie characters. Then, of course, there are newspapers, and loads of information that children can read on the World Wide Web too!
The next thing that you can do in order to create a positive reading environment and encourage reading at home is to work with your child to create a special place where reading can be done. You can encourage them to decorate it in the way that they see fit, and you can even include a special toy or two that they can have in the area. It should have a comfortable chair, a desk, and writing and drawing supplies. This way, as they read, they can take notes or even draw pictures regarding the information that they have read. Your child will love the fact that they have their own space, and that they can create it in the way that they like the most!
The next way that you can create a positive atmosphere when it comes to reading is to ensure that you read with your child, and that you read yourself. Children are lead by example. If you take the time to indulge in reading various types of material, and your child observes this, they are more likely to follow in your footsteps. Following this step, and the others mentioned throughout this guide will assist you in creating a positive reading environment at home!
